Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
